Women’s Baseball World Cup: USA use long ball and are still in play

2018-08-30

The USA used the long ball, home runs by Jade Gortarez and Megan Baltzell, to defeat Canada 5-1 and remain alive in the race f0r a spot in the final of the Women’s Baseball World Cup.
Japan is already qualified for the World Championship game, while the Dominican Republic and Venezuela are eliminated from the medal race. The third and last day of the super round is highlighted by Chinese Taipei-Canada. A win would send Chinese Taipei to the final, a win by Canada will very likely create a three way tie. The USA need to win against the Dominican Republic and count on favourable outcomes.

The USA scared Canada started Anne Sophie Lavallée with two outs in the top of the first. Malaika Underwood and Megan Baltzell reached on back to back singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Lavallée got out of the inning striking out Michelle Cobb.

Nicole Luchanski singled off Amanda Sementelli to lead off the bottom half of the frame. Gélinas sent a slow roller to second and reached on an error. Luchanski reached third when Kelsey Lalor sent a pop to shallow rightfield. The ball fell in front of Brittany Gomez, who got the force out with a quick throw to second. A run scored as Katherine Psota grounded out to shortstop.

The USA reverted the lead in the top of the second. Kylee Lahners led off with a double and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Lavallée hit Gomez and Jade Gortarez drove both runners home with a blast that cleared the left field fence.

The hosts used the long ball again in the top of the third. Megan Baltzell was all over the fourth offering by Lavallée and drove it over the fence in dead center for the second home run of the game and her tournament.
The USA added a run, building on two more hits (a single by Michelle Cobb and a double by Anna Kimbrell) and a defensive error. It was it for Lavallée, that left for Allison Schroder. The newcomer walked Gomez, but then got out of the jam with a couple of groundouts, the first at the home plate.

Schroder wouldn’t allow another run to the USA, that sat comfortably on the five-run lead built between the second and the third inning. Sementelli earned the win pitching six innings. Megan Meidingler took care of the final six outs.

Megan Baltzell provided power with her second home run in the tournament
