VIII Women’s Baseball World Cup - Official Payoff

Chinese Taipei erases four run deficit, beats Canada and will play the Women’s Baseball World Cup final

Chinese Taipei recovered from a shock start, came from behind to beat Canada 6-4 and advance to the final of the Women’s Baseball World Championship. Down by four runs (on four hits) after the first inning, starting pitcher Huang Chiao Yun allowed only five more hits and pitched a complete game to grab the win.

Canada was off a stunning start against Huang Chiao Yun. Nicole Luchansky led off with a double. With one out, Huang hit Kelsey Lalor. Katherine Psota followed with a pop to shallow right center that fell for the base hit and loaded the bases. Amanda Asay hit a towering fly in the gap to right center that fell for a ground rule double and scored two runs. Chinese Taipei couldn’t get an out on a hard grounder to first by Daphnée Gélinas (and was charged an error). One more run scored and Canada added another one on a pop to shallow center field by Madison Willan that fell for the base hit.

Chinese Taipei obviously didn’t give up. Chen Yu Hsuan led off with a ground rule double against Elizabeth Gilder and Yang Chia Hui followed with a base hit. With runners at the corners, Chinese Taipei went for the double steal. Yang was trapped between first and second and advanced to second on the throw home, that was not in time to get Chen. Yang scored on line drive double to left by Chan Hsiao Mei. Gilder hit Shen Chia Wenand walked Wen Ya Bo to load the bases. Gilder went to the showers without getting an out.
Reliever Hannah Martensen got the first out when Hsieh Yu Ying sent a sharp grounder up the middle. Shortstop Gélinas got the force out, but a head first slide by Hsieh Yu beat the throw to first and Chinese Taipei scored the third run. The inning ended when Tu Yu Chuan grounded into an inning ending double play.

After stranding a bases loaded and one out situation in the second, Chinese Taipei reversed the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out, Hsieh Yu Ying singled to right field. Martensen walked Tu Yu Chuan and Canada’s defense couldn’t stop a hard grounder by Tseng Chin to the right. On the play Hsieh scored and Tu reached third. Lee Shih Yun singled in Tu and a pushed bunt by Chen Yu Hsuan took Tseng home.

Claire Eccles took over for Martensen in the top of the fourth and managed to silence Chinese Taipei line up. Huang Chiao Yun used 118 pitches, 71 strikes, to complete the game and lead Chinese Taipei to their first ever Women’s Baseball World Cup final.
